I've used this light with only AA batteries and its brighter then the $90 flashlight I use at work that uses 4 AA batteries. The 3 modes change every time you turn on and off the flash light. You can also cycle the 3 modes by lightly pressing the on button. Next time I will get one like this with only 1 mode (on/off).
